The Unrealistic Expectations Of A New Mother

Updated: Mar 26

It's important to recognize that the expectations placed on new moms can be unrealistic and can often lead to unnecessary pressure and stress. Motherhood is a unique and individual experience, and it's perfectly normal for it to be different for each person. Let's address each of these expectations one by one:

  1. "Bounce Back": The idea that a new mom should quickly return to her pre-pregnancy body and lifestyle is unrealistic. Pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period bring significant physical and emotional changes. It takes time for a woman's body to recover, and every journey is different. It's important to prioritize self-care, listen to your body, and give yourself grace during this transformative period.

  2. Loving every second of motherhood: While motherhood can be a beautiful and rewarding experience, it's also filled with challenges, sleep deprivation, and emotional ups and downs. It's normal to have moments of frustration, exhaustion, and doubt. Loving your child doesn't mean you have to love every second of the journey. It's okay to acknowledge the difficulties and seek support when needed.

  3. Natural instincts: While some aspects of motherhood may come naturally to some women, for many, it's a learning process. It's okay to ask for help, seek guidance, and learn from others. Building a bond with your child takes time and effort, and it's perfectly normal to have moments of uncertainty. Trust yourself and give yourself permission to grow into your role as a mother.

  4. Partnership changes: Becoming parents often brings significant changes to a couple's relationship. The dynamics may shift, and it takes time and open communication to adjust to the new roles and responsibilities. It's important to have realistic expectations and be willing to work together as a team, supporting each other through the challenges that parenthood brings.

  5. Prioritizing the same things: With the arrival of a baby, priorities naturally change. Taking care of a newborn requires time, energy, and attention. It's normal for other aspects of life, such as career or hobbies, to take a backseat temporarily. It's important to find a balance that works for you and your family and be gentle with yourself as you navigate these changes.

Remember, every mother's journey is unique, and it's essential to let go of unrealistic expectations and embrace the reality of your own experience. Reach out for support from loved ones, join communities of fellow moms, and remember to take care of yourself along the way.
